Vienna School of Fantastic Realism

The Vienna School of Fantastic Realism is a term that was coined by Joahnn Muschik for a trend in Austrian art following on from Surrealism.

The painting style is inspired by the technical perfection of the Old Masters, the motives are unreal-fantastic creations, sometimes with shocking, apocalyptic content, often with a focus on Mannerism. From the first joint exhibition at Vienna's Belvedere in 1959, soon other exhibitions abroad followed, until the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism made their breakthrough internationally. Their work has influenced many pupils and imitators.

The main representatives are, Ernst Fuchs, Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner, Anton Lehmden und Wolfgang Hutter.
